ADVICE FROM RANGE’S WILLIAM PHELPS
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an important time for families to reflect on their online habits to ensure they’re employing smart security practices. In today’s digital age, it’s essential for every family member, from young children to grandparents, to be equipped with the knowledge to stay safe online. Range’s Cybersecurity Specialist, William Phelps, shares these tips to help your family:
Educate Your Family on Phishing Scams
Phishing scams often appear as legitimate emails or messages but are designed to steal personal information. Teach your family to be cautious about unknown emails, especially those requesting sensitive information or urging immediate action. Always verify the sender’s email address and look for signs of fraudulent emails, such as poor grammar or unfamiliar links.
Keep Software and Devices Updated
Ensure all devices—including smartphones, tablets, and computers—are up to date with the latest software and security patches to help protect them from vulnerabilities. Automatic updates are ideal.
Discuss Safe Social Media Practices
Talk with your family about the importance of privacy on social media. Emphasize not sharing personal information publicly, such as addresses, phone numbers, or vacation plans. Teach them about the privacy settings on social media platforms and review them regularly.
Monitor Online Activities
Supervise the online activities of younger children and establish clear rules about internet usage. Utilize parental controls and child-friendly browsers, and keep computers in common areas where activity can be easily monitored.
Educate About Cyberbullying
Make sure your children know they can come to you if they experience or witness cyberbullying. Create an open line of communication to discuss their online interactions and empower them to block and report any harassment or bullying behaviors.
Talk to Your Teens About Sextortion
There is a rising trend in our nation of teens thinking they’ve found a new romance online. As the so-called romance evolves, eventually the predator convinces them to send compromising photos. Once the teen does this, they’re blackmailed and told if they don’t pay up, the photos will be sent to family and friends, or posted on social media. Tragically, this sextortion has led to the suicide of teens who didn’t know how to handle the situation.
Taking a proactive approach to cybersecurity can make a world of difference in protecting your family’s personal information and online well-being. By implementing these tips and fostering open communication about the importance of cybersecurity, you can help ensure your family stays safe online.
